A fantastic Christmas Concert
The North Durban Lions 2011 Christmas Concert (mentioned previously here) was a fantastic success. More than 350 adults and more than 75 children came along on the evening of Friday 16 December, leading to a terrific atmosphere. Many people came much earlier than the 18:00 start, in order to get a good seat, as they knew the event would be popular.
Lenny Bowes entertained the crowd, performing great classics and really setting a festive mood.
The Durban City Orchestra then played a magnificent set, including a variety of Christmas favorites and medleys – the entire crowd was rapt with attention during the performance.
In addition, there were a variety of market and food stalls selling a large range of terrific items.
The North Durban Lions club would like to thank each and every member of the public who came along and made it a great night. We would also like to express our deepest gratitude to the Pick n Pay Hyper-by-the-Sea, whose generous financial support enabled the event to be organised in the first.
The evening’s profits will be used to directly aid children’s projects and those for the elderly.
Thank you again to everyone who came and who contributed to making the concert and evening such a success – we’ll see you next year!

Lions Christmas Cakes Now Available
The delicious Lions Christmas Cakes are now available. As for many years now, they have been baked by Albany, so you can be sure of their quality and taste.
They will cost R65 this year. As with all funds raised by any Lions club, all the proceeds of the sale of Lions Christmas Cakes will go directly for charitable projects.
Not only will you be getting a truly delicious Christmas cake for your R65, you’ll be making an invaluable charitable contribution as well.
If you would like to purchase some cakes from the North Durban Club, please leave a message on this page, use our contact page or contact one of our members directly.
If you’re not in the Durban North/La Lucia/Umhlanga or surrounding areas, your local Lions club will almost certainly be selling cakes as well.

Glenashley Fun Day
For several years, the club has sold candyfloss and popcorn at the annual Glenashley Junior Primary School Fun Day. This year, we sold more than we ever have before – both the candyfloss and popcorn machines operated nonstop for several hours.
40% of the income from the event is given to the school, as an educational donation from the club.

National Koi Show
The club was invited by the KZN branch of the National Koi Keepers Society to sell tea, coffee and cake at the 2011 National Koi Show held at the Gateway shopping centre on 23 and 24 July. The club also manned the entrance gate for the event.
Our grateful thanks must go to the KZN Koi Keepers Society for inviting us to take part. Invaluable funds were raised, the proceeds of which will all go to charitable projects (as with all funds raised from the public by any Lions club). Some 1500 or more people also saw the club at work, giving us excellent exposure.

Hospice and SPCA Cheque Handover
The Quilters-by-the-Sea quilters group recently donated two magnificent quilts to the club, to raffle off to raise funds for charity. The club raised over R8000 raffling these king-size and single-bed quilts. Along with the funds raised at the club’s craft shows, we were able to give R7500 to the Durban and Coast SPCA and the Highway Hospice. The cheques were handed over at a function held at our clubhouse on Friday 3 June. Heather Walker of the Hospice was on hand to receive their cheque, and Carolyn Smith from the SPCA also attended.
The winners of the quilts were unfortunately unable to attend to collect their quilts: Ernie Clarke of Morningside won the king-size quilt, and Jacqui Olivier of Pretoria won the single-bed size. Dixie Benn, the chairlady of the Quilters-by-the-Sea group and coincidentally Jacqui’s mother, collected the quilt for Jacqui.
A certificate of appreciation was presented to the Quilters-by-the-Sea, in recognition of their generous donation.
Our thanks also to Lauren Anthony of the North Glen News, who gave up some of her time to take some photos of the event.

Durban Skiboat Festival Catering
For the second year running, the club was invited to provide some of the catering to the Durban Skiboat Club’s annual Skiboat Festival, held at the Skiboat Club on the Point. We sold wors rolls, chicken and beef burgers, which were extremely well received by the attendees.
Many grateful thnks are due to the Lions and their friends who gave up part of their Easter weekends to assist at the event – a very healthy profit was raised for charity.
Great thanks must go to the Farmhouse Butchery, on Umhlanga Rocks drive. They gave us an extremely generous price on their chicken burgers, beef burgers and top notch boerewors. The club is deeply grateful for their generous support.
The club has already been invited to come back next year.

Presentation Evening
DG Debbie Berry visited the club at our February meeting on 24 February. Instead of holding a regular meeting, the club decided to instead have a presentation evening to thank individuals and organisations who have helped the club serve the community. Several awards were also made. Our new member Nick was inducted by DG Debbie.
A certificate of thanks was presented to Lauren Anthony of the Northgen News, to thank the paper for promoting our fundraising and service events.
A certificate of thanks was also presented to Lauren Glossop, the Audiologist who has assisted the club’s hearing projects by donating large amounts of time and free services:

DG Debbie received the club’s banner from LP Ian, and presented one of her banners in return. DG Debbie then spoke on a number of topics to do with Lionism, including the importance of membership growth and the service we do, and commended the club for its successes.
The evening concluded with awards for several Lions: Lions Maria Stowe and Trevor Hobbs were presented with Membership Keys to acknowledge that each had sponsored two new Lions.A 25 Year Monarch Chevron was presented to Lion Trevor in recognition of his 25 years of service as a Lion.
DG Debbie also handed over a very special award to Lion Trevor Hobbs, who was made a Melvin Jones Fellow by the club. This was a complete surprise to Lion Trevor, and richly deserved for his more than 25 years of dedicated and extremely selfless service to Lions:
