Tutus for the Pink Phoenix Foundation “Tutus and Takkies” Beach Walk

The Pink Phoenix Foundation raises funds for cancer treatment and to increase cancer awareness. One of their annual fundraisers is a 5km walk or run on the Umhlanga beach front, where participants are encouraged to wear pink, particularly pink tutus. The club took orders for tutus from participants and sold more on the day before the event, donating all the funds raised to the Pink Phoenix Foundation. The tutus were so popular even Melvin the Lion’s tutu was sold before the walk began.

Heritage Day Braai for Residents of TAFTA On Ridge

For several years, the club has provided a lunchtime braai for the residents of the TAFTA On Ridge retirement home. Every year many residents tell the club members that its the best meal they have all year. This year was no different – on 16 June 2018 several club members braaied burgers, chicken or veg patties for the residents, served with chips and followed by ice cream. The meal was extremely well received and the club was glad to brighten the day of many mature members of its community.

“Nick” Nicholas Called to Higher Service

It is with great sadness that we share the news that one of our past members and valued true friend has been called to Higher Service. Malcolm “Nick” Nicholas was a true gentleman and friend. He will be remembered fondly by the regulars at The Golden Hours market where he ran our stall for us – especially when we ourselves could not. His life was an inspiration and his memory a benediction, Nick was and always will be a Lion, dedicated to the service of others.

Thank you to everyone who supports the club’s collections – the food you donate is packaged and distributed to more than 125 people in need every month.

Pick ‘n Hyper Car Draw

Pick ‘n Pay Hyper-by-the-Sea Hypermarket invited the club to sell wors rolls and cold drinks at the build-up and draw for the giveaway of a new Ford bakkie. A large number of people came to the draw and many enjoyed a delicious wors roll while they were there. The club would like to thank the Hypermarket for giving it an opportunity to raise significant funds that will completely be used to aid the needy, as with all Lions fundraising projects.

2015 Presidential Induction Evening

The club celebrated the induction of Lion President Vicki van Wyk as the club’s 49th president at a formal dinner held at the club’s clubhouse on 11 July 2015.  The club was also delighted to induct and welcome Elaine Turton and Avril Hobbs as new members at the same evening. 26 guests from other Lions clubs and friends of the club joined the members for a lovely and special evening.

In keeping with new Lions International President Dr Jitsuhiro Yamada’s theme for the year, the table decor included more than 60 colourful folded paper cranes.

Outgoing Lion President Trevor Hobbs spoke on the excellent year of service the club had completed and presented several awards, including awarding Lion Phil Meyer as the 2014/2015 Lion of the Year.

6 members of the East Coast Lions club were present on the evening and they presented the club with a much needed replacement microwave.

LP Vicki opened her year of leadership by introducing her theme and plans for the year, built around being “keys of service”.

Some photos of the evening are below:

Unusually, there were 2 Michaels, 2 Denises and 2 Ruths at the same table.
