Wheelchair Donation

Lions Margo Whitmore and Jimmy Hollows recently received a request from a very needy and deserving family to assist with a wheelchair. Both parents in the family are wheelchair bound and have a variety of other medical ailments as well, including diabetes. The club was delighted to be able to donate a wheelchair to the Perumal family. We’re very grateful to the Rotary Club of Umhlanga who provided the wheelchair to the club and enabled us to serve the community together with this very helpful donation.

Another successful Christmas Concert

The 2012 North Durban Lions Christmas Concert was again a huge success – several hundred members of the community enjoyed a fantastic evening with the Durban City Orchestra, Lenny Bowes and Jason Bird, doing a selection of Christmas favourites and feel-good tunes. The club raised valuable funds for those in need – we would like to thank everyone who came along on the evening for your generous and fantastic support.

2012 Christmas Concert

The North Durban Lions are pleased to announce that they will once again be hosting a Christmas Concert, in conjunction with the Durban City Orchestra. The concert will once again be held at the Golden Hours market grounds. In addition to the orchestra, other musical acts will perform and there will be food stalls and refreshments available. Secure parking will be available.

As with all Lions projects, all the proceeds of the concert will be used for charitable projects.

This concert has become a tradition in the area – please come along and enjoy a fantastic evening.

Where: Golden Hours market grounds, on the corner of Radar and Uitsig Roads, a block behind the Hypermarket.

When: Saturday 8 December

Time: 18:00. Gates will open at 17:00.

Cost: R25 for adults, R15 for children.

Lion Keith Wilson Called to Higher Service

Lion Keith Wilson passed away in the late hours of Monday 5 November, after a long and brave battle with cancer.

Lion Keith served his community as a Lion for 17 years, first with the Morningside Lions Club and then with the North Durban Lions Club. He served his fellow Lions in a number of positions, including Club Secretary, Club Treasurer, Club President and Zone Chair, and he served those in need with selfless dedication in many more ways than can be named. He was willing to help wherever he was needed and will be remembered by his friends and fellow Lions as being a real character and true friend.

Lion Keith will be missed by all who knew him – there is a large gap in the North Durban Lions club and in our members’ hearts.

Lion Keith was a fantastic Lion and person, I have fond memories of our Mid Years at Harrismith when Mr. Ping and Mr. Wilson would load ice and beer in my basin so that I could not shave and what about the fire he started at the restaurant at Virginia Airport at an induction dinner. He always had a smile and a chuckle. He will be missed.

Club and member recognition at the 2012 District 410C Midyear Conference

At the 2012 Lions District 410C Midyear Conference, a number of awards were made to clubs for their efforts in the 2011/2012 Lionistic year (the Lionistic year runs from July to June). The North Durban Lions club are delighted and proud to announce that the club and individual members won several awards for the 2011/2012 year:

DISTRICT ENVIRONMENTAL PHOTO CONTEST: District Chairperson Denise Bolland won second prize in both the “Plant Life” and “Weather Phenomenon” categories in this competition, while District Cabinet Secretary Vicki van Wyk won first prize in the “Animal” category. Congratulations to them both.

DENIS MEYER IT AWARD: This award is presented to a club who makes full use of various electronic media, such as a comprehensive website, Twitter and Facebook and which does as much club administration as possible using online methods.

GEOFF CHETTLE CLUB SECRETARY AWARD: This award is judged based on the administration of a Lions club – regular and timeous completion and submission of meeting minutes, submission of Monthly Membership Reports, Activity Reports and club officer reporting forms in good time to the District, attendance at Zone and District events as the secretary and responsiveness to requests for information from the District. District Cabinet Secretary Vicki van Wyk was the deserved winner of this award – The North Durban Lions club is very proud of her achievement and believe the quality of her work as the club secretary has been justly rewarded.

Lions Christmas Cakes Now Available

The delicious Lions Christmas Cakes are now available. As for many years now, they have been baked by Albany, so you can be sure of their quality and taste.

They will cost R70 this year. As with all funds raised by any Lions club, all the proceeds of the sale of Lions Christmas Cakes will be used directly for charitable projects.

Not only will you be getting a truly delicious Christmas cake for your R70, you’ll be making an invaluable charitable contribution as well.

If you would like to purchase some cakes from the North Durban Club, please leave a message on this page, use our contact page or contact one of our members directly.

If you’re not in the Durban North/La Lucia/Umhlanga or surrounding areas, your local Lions club will almost certainly be selling cakes as well.

Market and Music Day

The North Durban Lions are pleased to announce that they will be hosting a Market and Music day on Woman’s Day, at the Golden Hours market grounds. There will be market stalls and food stalls and music thoughout the day. Proceeds raised will be used for Lions projects and to benefit the Golden Hours school for special needs children. Come join us for a fun day under the trees. Secure parking will be available.

Lions Information Evening

If you would like to know more about how the North Durban Lions Club is serving its community, and possibly how you can become involved (either by becoming a member or generally helping out), please consider coming to our Information Evening, on March 30.

We will have a fascinating and very motivational speaker who is a long-standing and greatly distinguished Lion. Snacks will be served and a cash bar will be available.

The many projects the club is involved in will be showcased and members of the club will be on hand to answer any questions you may have.

First Aid Training

The Cowies Hill Lions club recently conducted Level I first aid training, at a minimal cost. Lion Trevor Hobbs and his son Grant attended from the North Durban club – well done to them both for passing the training.

Eco-circle Vegetable Gardens

Eco-circles are a fantastic way of using a small area and very little water to grow a variety of vegetables. The Lions clubs of Multiple District 410 have been encouraged to plant eco-circles, at their clubhouses, local schools, orphanages and the like. Several clubs in District 410C have made plans to start eco-circles. Lions Bev and Pat Riley of the North Durban club have planted 6 circles at their home – one tended by each member of the family. The circles have yielded fantastic vegetables and shown the concept to be an excellent one.
