Club Awards at the 2013 District 410C Midyear Conference

At the 2013 Lions District 410C Midyear Conference, the North Durban Lions club were very proud to win the inaugural club food security award. The criteria for the award is that the winning club must:

a) Which donated the largest amount of food (in monetary value) during the period under consideration

b) Whose members put the most hours into food security related projects during the period under consideration

c)Which held the most significant food security related project or a series of major projects during the period under consideration in the consideration of the judges, even if the club does not meet the criteria of (a) or (b).

The club won the award on the strength of its food distribution project, in which it served many people in need by collecting, packaging and distributing at least R155 800 worth of food during the 2012/2013 Lions year, an achievement of which the club is extremely proud.

2013 District 410C Midyear Conference

Every year, the Lions clubs of the District gather for a conference. This is called the Midyear Conference and brings together Lions from across KZN and the Free State to discuss how best to serve those in need. Lions tend to leave the Conference inspired to serve with renewed passion. The North Durban Lions Club convened the 2013 Midyear Conference, which was an enormous success. Many of the attendees considered it one of the best Conferences they’ve ever attended.

The Conference was a lot of hard work to organise but doing so successfully was extremely rewarding.

The Club would like to thank its many generous sponsors for assisting with prizes and items to place into the well-stocked Conference bags:

  • Future Life
  • Cooee
  • Your Family magazine
  • Discovery Health
  • Bay Union Investment Planning Services
  • Marshall Security
  • Tupperware
  • Umhlanga Accommodation
  • Star Stationers
  • Brand House Marketing
  • Pick n Pay Hypermarket
  • Cipla
  • Medpro
  • The Sharks

The club received many wonderful notes of thanks from attending Lions, which are included below:

DG Heather Hardman, Cowies Hill Lions Club:
What a Mid Year. North Durban Lions thank you so much for an outstanding and enjoyable 410C Mid Year Conference. To all the Lions that attended thanks for the fellowship and making it very memorable. To those that did not attend you do not know what you missed. I cannot believe that I rocked and rolled the night away but my today my body is feeling it. It is great to be Lion and serving those that need to receive our love and hope.

DC Karin Preston, eThekwini South Lions Club:

Lion Gwen Ellis, Kingsburgh Lions Club:
Dear L P Vicki

On behalf of all three of us from the Lions Club of Kingsburgh who
attended the recent Conference may I express our sincere thanks. We
truly had a thoroughly good time and want to compliment you on a very
well run weekend. Your attention to detail was impressive.

Having been involved in the planning of both Mid-year Conferences and
MD Conventions, I am personally aware of the huge amount of work and
the many many hours involved.

Please pass our thanks on to L Trevor as Convener and to all your
members who gave so much of themselves.

Lion Pat Wilson, Kingsburgh Lions Club:
I would like to extend my personal sincere thanks to each and every member of North Durban Lions who must have given up many, many of their precious hours in order to plan, organise, provide and create every single aspect, right down to the smallest detail, that went into making the Mid-year Conference 2013 weekend such an outstanding, successful, motivating, fun-filled and memorable experience.

Something I was very aware of and really appreciated too was the fact that the members clearly displayed that in the true spirit of Lionism they are prepared to show warmth, caring, helpfulness and friendliness to other Lion members and not only to the communities in which they serve.
I am a new Lion, but can honestly say that “I am proud to serve with you” and to be a part of such an amazing organisation. THANK YOU FOR MAKING MY FIRST MID-YEAR CONFERENCE SO SPECIAL.

WELL DONE NORTH DURBAN LIONS – May your Club continue to grow and succeed in all its endeavours.

Lion Sheila Rice, North Durban Lions Club:

Hi to all the members that made the Mid Year convention such a success. We did great, we can be proud of what we achieved. Thank you to Pres Vicki, Lions Trevor, Kim Jimmy, Ian P and R, Fred, Denise, Kay, for the happy times that we shared preparing and then putting together such an amazing saturday night theme. Together we can do anything.

Braai for residents of TAFTA on Ridge

The North Durban Lions Club supplied a braai for the 120 residents of TAFTA on Ridge, supplying beef and chicken burgers and salads. The residents really enjoyed it, with several saying it was the best meal they had had in more than 5 years. It was very rewarding to see the great joy a simple braai brought to the home.20130924_103200

Further postponement of the North Durban Lions Music and Market Day

The North Durban Lions Music and Market Day had been rescheduled for 24 September – but unfortunately it will not be possible to provide most of the entertainment which was planned for the day. The club has rather postponed the day to a later date, yet to be decided on – either around Christmas or relatively early in the new year.

The club would like thank everyone who was planning to come along to the day and support the club in its efforts to raise funds to assist those in need. Its unfortunate that we’ve had to postpone the day again, but the circumstances make it unavoidable.

The new date will of course be published and advertised once it is decided.

Mandela Day Project at Golden Hours School

The North Durban Lions Club put on a party for the boarders at the Golden Hours School for intellectually disabled children. Several of the club’s members were joined by some of the friends of the club, who regularly take part in the club’s projects and LP Vanessa Wilesmith of the Durban South Lions club. As the project was 2 days after Mandela Day, the club’s friends and members were encouraged to consider it as a Mandela Day contribution. The kids made and decorated their own face masks and iced marie biscuits. They also enjoyed rides in the trailer of the club’s tractor. As a special treat, Melvin was on hand to greet and play with the kids and was a great hit. The project was a huge success and brought so much joy to the kids that many of the Lions and friends were close to tears.

Wheelchair Donation

Lions Margo Whitmore and Jimmy Hollows recently received a request from a very needy and deserving family to assist with a wheelchair. Both parents in the family are wheelchair bound and have a variety of other medical ailments as well, including diabetes. The club was delighted to be able to donate a wheelchair to the Perumal family. We’re very grateful to the Rotary Club of Umhlanga who provided the wheelchair to the club and enabled us to serve the community together with this very helpful donation.

A photo of the wheelchair handover is below:
