Induction Evening
The club held its annual presidential induction dinner on Saturday 25 July at its clubhouse. This is always a formal event and as usual, was greatly enjoyed by all who attended.
Lion Wendy Ferguson was inducted into the club by the club’s guest for the evening, Lion Tricia Smith.
LP Ian presented a report on his excellent year in charge, highlighting the many projects we have run and the enormous amount of work the club did for those in need.
LP Ian handed out several awards and certificates of appreciation to many members who worked so hard during the year.
Lion Kay Erskine received a membership key award from Lions Clubs International in recognition of the 10 new Lions Kay has sponsored. Lion Denise Bolland received a similar award for sponsoring 3 new members.
Lion Vicki van Wyk was the deserved recipient of the North Durban Lions Lion of the Year award for her dedicated work as the club secretary and her support at almost every activity the club undertook.
Lion Tricia inducted Lion Kim van Wyk as the 44th president of the North Durban Lions club. LP Kim presented his board and plans for the year to the club. He paid special tribute to Lion Ian’s excellent leadership during the past year. Lion Ian had explicitly asked not to be given a plaque commemorating his year as president (he has one from a previous stint as club president) so the club presented him instead with a certificate to mark his outstanding service and a hamper of goodies.

Charter of East Coast Lions Club
The North Durban Lions Club is extremely proud to be the chartering club for a brand new Lions club in Durban: the East Coast Lions Club. The club was chartered at a black tie event at the Coastlands Umhlanga hotel on Saturday 18 July. 48 new Lions were inducted, making it one of the largest clubs in Southern Africa.
LP Ian Ping presided at the function, while several North Durban members attended the function, many of whom took part in the formalities. Several Lionistic dignitaries attended, including Council Chair Rashmi Kooverjee, District Governor Debbie Berry, District Governor Elect Stuart Charlton, First Vice District Governor Elect Adrian Barnes and the presidents of several of the clubs in District C. The Consul General of India was also in attendance.
Lion Trevor Hobbs of North Durban acted as the MC for the evening.
Lion Trevor and Lion Denise Bolland will be the Guiding Lions for the new club, attending their meetings and providing a wealth of Lionistic experience and wisdom for the new club to draw on.
North Durban Lions wish Charter Lion President Sundru Pillay and all the members of the new East Coast Lions Club every success as they start their Lionistic journey. We look forward to working with the East Coast Lions in the current year as we collectively fulfil the Lions motto: “We serve”.

District 410C Youth Day Project
District 410C asked all the Lions clubs in the District to organise a youth-oriented project on or around National Youth Day, 16 June. The North Durban Lions treated approximately 150 children at the Golden Hours School for Special Needs Children to cooldrink, chips and cake during lunch on 15 June. This is a rare treat for many of them and was greatly appreciated.

Hospice and SPCA Cheque Handover
The Quilters-by-the-Sea quilters group recently donated two magnificent quilts to the club, to raffle off to raise funds for charity. The club raised over R8000 raffling these king-size and single-bed quilts. Along with the funds raised at the club’s craft shows, we were able to give R7500 to the Durban and Coast SPCA and the Highway Hospice. The cheques were handed over at a function held at our clubhouse on Friday 3 June. Heather Walker of the Hospice was on hand to receive their cheque, and Carolyn Smith from the SPCA also attended.
The winners of the quilts were unfortunately unable to attend to collect their quilts: Ernie Clarke of Morningside won the king-size quilt, and Jacqui Olivier of Pretoria won the single-bed size. Dixie Benn, the chairlady of the Quilters-by-the-Sea group and coincidentally Jacqui’s mother, collected the quilt for Jacqui.
A certificate of appreciation was presented to the Quilters-by-the-Sea, in recognition of their generous donation.
Our thanks also to Lauren Anthony of the North Glen News, who gave up some of her time to take some photos of the event.
